Teaming up on medication safety!

2019 Manitoba Workshop on Wise Medication Use for Older Adults

WHY THE FUSS ABOUT MEDICATION SAFETY FOR OLDER ADULTS?

Did you know that 58% of Manitobans over age 65 take at least 5 medications? Or that 1 in 5 takes at least 10? (CIHI 2018)

Medications can help us in many different ways. However, as we age, our bodies become more sensitive to the effects of medications. Some medications may even carry more risk than benefit, causing falls, memory problems, and even hospitalizations. The more medications we take, the greater the risk of harmful side effects. In fact, older adults are hospitalized due to harmful medication effects five times more often than other age groups.

MANITOBA IS TAKING ACTION

The Canadian Deprescribing Network, Manitoba Association of Senior Centres and Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety are excited to present the 2019 Manitoba Workshop on Wise Medication Use for Older Adults, Teaming up on Medication Safety! This one-day workshop will equip participants with knowledge and tools to promote safe medication use for older adults in their communities.

Through engaging presentations by leading experts, interactive activities and peer learning, participants will learn about the importance of cautious medication use and how empowering the public with information can lead to safe medication use. They’ll also gain resources for helping their communities have informed conversations with their health providers about their medications. What’s more, you’ll be invited to join an online community of healthy aging champions working to improve medication safety for older adults across Canada.

Do you want to help your community make informed decisions about their medications and their health? Then this workshop is for you!
